Ephesus' Adventist Community Service Department

The Adventist Community Services (ACS) of the Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church in the heart of Harlem, stands as a vibrant testimony to the community support and engagement, under the directorship of Dr. Hydie Aurelien. This department has become an integral part of the Harlem community, not only addressing immediate needs but also empowering residents with skills for life.

At its core, the ACS department is dedicated to serving the community through a variety of tangible acts of kindness and support. They distribute clothing to those in need, ensuring that individuals and families have access to essential attire for various seasons and occasions. This initiative is particularly impactful in a community where economic challenges can make such necessities hard to come by.

Beyond meeting basic needs, the department also focuses on nourishing the community. Their efforts to feed Harlem residents go beyond merely alleviating hunger; they foster a sense of belonging and community spirit. Through communal meals and food distribution, they bring people together, creating moments of joy and connection.

Recognizing the importance of personal development and enrichment, the ACS department offers an array of classes designed to enhance life skills and hobbies. Piano classes open up the world of music to individuals of all ages, encouraging artistic expression and providing a creative outlet. Crochet classes offer the chance to learn a new craft, promoting relaxation and the joy of creating something by hand. Furthermore, CPR classes are provided, equipping community members with crucial lifesaving skills. These educational opportunities reflect the department's commitment to holistic care—catering not only to physical needs but also to mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

The ACS department at the Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church has become a cornerstone of the Harlem community, embodying the church's mission of service and compassion. Through their diverse programs, from clothing distribution to life-enriching classes, they have made a profound and positive impact on the lives of many, demonstrating the power of community and the enduring spirit of service.

 Our History

- In 1874, ACS began as the Dorcas and Benevolent Association composed of women providing clothes, food, financial support and services to needy families in churches and in their communities.  This is why until the World War II era, the humanitarian work of local Seventh-day Adventist churches was known as the Dorcas Society. Dorcas was a disciple in the early Christian church in the city of Joppa who was well regarded as a person who was always doing good and helping those in need (Acts 9:36-43).

- In 1879, the Dorcas Societies wanted to involve their husbands so the Good Samaritan Society was organized.

- In 1953, the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church broadened the concept of service to urban ministry. This new organization was named Seventh-day Adventist Health and Welfare Services (SAWS).

- In 1972, the name was changed to Adventist Community Services (ACS).

- In 1983, the church organized the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) International to serve societies outside of North America more effectively. ADRA is a church owned non-governmental organization (NGO) that works at a global level sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist Church to provide international relief and development.

- In 2005, ACS expanded its ministry with ACS International under the General Conference Sabbath School and Personal Ministry Department to focus on Adventists in community services and outreach ministries at the local church level.
